Recto: "No. 5. // Left Wing. // About 4:00, the gunboats noticed an attempt of the rebels to cross one the hollows leading to the river and plant a battery on the hill to prevent Nelson's crossing and capture or destroy our transports, they immediately opened fire, and shelled the woods and hollow with such affect [sic] that the rebels abandoned the attempt and fell back. This action and the grand artillery defences which Maj. Cavender and Capt. Madison (see sketch) made on the hills just back of the landing saved our troops from defeat. // Pittsburgh Landing. // Transport. // Gen. Nelson crossing his troops. // Gunboat Taylor, Capt. Gwinn. // Gunboat Lexington, Captain Sherk."
